News

Vicki Bryan writes:

I would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers during the past months, for without them I would have felt so lost.  Although my previous operation was a failure I hope the next in August will be successful.

President of Conference

The President of Conference for 2010/11 is the little sister of one of our own Local Preachers;  the Revd. Alison Tomlin is 4 years younger than Helen Barrett!!  There are also 2 older brothers, one of whom also nearly became a Methodist Minister. Alison was ordained in Wolverhampton in 1984.  She has an English degree from Essex University and studied at Hartley Victoria College in Manchester. Married to David, who has just retired from the Methodist Ministry, she has 2 daughters, Karen who is a paediatrician in Truro and Cath who works in waste management. Alison has a special interest in knowing God in unlikely places, and in Justice & Peace issues – she wore a Fairtrade cassock for her inauguration and will wear a white poppy, with a red one, at the Cenotaph.  She has developed an expertise in leading retreats, though there will be little time for that this year! Please pray for Alison as she represents us at home and abroad and mixes with the “great and the good” and the not so great and not so good!!

News from the Churches - Southfield

Our monthly visits to Little Oldway Residential Home started when Deacon Susie Fytche was in the Circuit – as outreach.   There were just three of us, two from Southfield and Susie to begin with.   Susie became unwell so we carried on visiting Little Oldway with just three ladies – we had gained one lady in Susie's place.  Since then we really have increased in numbers;  we are now up to eight, sometimes nine. As the home has a keyboard we take an organist with us to play for the hymns.  We have quite a lot printed out in large print so that the residents can take part, which they do and enjoy singing with us.  At the moment we are very lucky to have Deacon Jane Verrall, who leads the service which consists of four hymns, bible reading, prayers and a short address. We also have Holy Communion services, e.g. Christmas, Easter and perhaps a couple during the rest of the year.   These services are taken either by our own minister or the Rev. Adrian Phippen.

The staff and residents welcome us at Little Oldway and gather as many of the elderly folk to join us as possible.   We have made friends with the residents, and feel we are doing a worthwhile service by going there.

Circuit Service

There will be a circuit service to commission and recognise Worship Leaders who have completed the formal training course. We will also commission our two Lay Pastoral Assistants. The service will be at St Andrews ay 6:00pm on Sunday 7th November.

Langley House Trust

Desperately seeking Susan…and Bob and Eileen…..! It was a delight to meet existing Langley House Trust supporters and to make new friends on our stand at the Methodist Conference in Torquay. The Trust, which provides support and accommodation for ex-offenders wishing to resettle crime-free, is currently looking to recruit more people to join our mailing list and we would like to ask you to prayerfully consider whether you would be willing to do this. A simple form (on the reverse of our “Pass it on” brochure) is available from our Head Office (tel: 01993 899594 or email: info@langleyhousetrust.org) and you get a Freepost envelope and a useful pen too, so it won’t take you a moment! Simply tick the boxes to tell us what you’d like to receive. We can send you spare brochures too, for you to pass to friends and colleagues.

By keeping in touch with developments at the Trust and by praying for our work, you will be playing an important part in the process of changing lives and breaking the cycle of re-offending which causes so much damage to individuals and to Society.

For more information about the work of the Langley House Trust please visit www.langleyhousetrust.org.

Torbay Civic Society 'Blue Plaque'

Click on the image to see a full size picture - then use the back button on your browser to return to this page.As a result of a joint initiative between the Torbay Circuit and the Torbay Civic Society, a plaque was unveiled on Thursday 18 October 2001 to commemorate the beginnings of Methodism in Torquay.

We had an excellent ceremony unveiling the plaque - the venue was the Burger King restaurant in Fleet Street, Torquay which is the closest point to where two cottages were converted in 1807 to form The Chapel In The Meadow, the first Methodist "church". The plaque was unveiled by the Deputy Mayor of Torbay (Councillor Heather Buckpit) together with 94 year old Leslie Callard whose brainchild the plaque was.

We were given splendid coverage by BBC Radio Devon by our local evening newspaper the Herald Express.

Some 60 people turned up and we surprised everyone by lustily singing "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling".  I doubt whether Burger King patrons had ever experienced the like of it before.
